It is a black-gray mineral with a metallic luster, not very reactive, very soft, greasy to the touch, usually in the form of grainy or earthy aggregates. It is formed at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. Graphite conducts electricity and heat well, it is cleavable, insoluble. Gaskets made of graphite plates can be used in the temperature range from -200 °C to 650 °C, with the exception that for steam it is allowed to use only up to 550 °C and in the case of oxidizing media up to 450 °C.
