Cork seals

At Vermet, we produce custom-made cork gaskets: single pieces as well as large series. Cork is still widely used in the gasket industry due to its unique sealing and elastic properties. The cork is available in a natural resin bonded form or in more custom forms, e.g. with added binders such as neoprene or nitrile. This material is cheap, waterproof and reliable, ideal for sealing.

Cork material is known for sealing wine bottles. This is due to the excellent tightness and water resistance it creates. Our cork gaskets are mainly supplied to the automotive, construction and landscaping industries for the same purposes. The main criterion for choosing a gasket material is to determine the application and what substances come into contact with the gasket. Cork is a cheap, flexible, lightweight and waterproof material that provides a perfect seal, e.g. in outdoor lighting. It is also heavily used in car oil pans where oil needs to be sealed, creating a long-term solution to leaks and seepage.

Cork is an excellent base material for sound deadening and is widely used under heavy-duty compressors or pumps to prevent excessive noise levels. Our offer of cork gaskets has a closed-cell structure, thanks to which they absorb noise from the reverberation of heavy machinery.

Types of cork gaskets

Depending on the application, cork gaskets can be adapted to your requirements. Since cork is suitable for many different uses, it is important to determine what it is protected against. Here is a selection of species:

Resin-bonded cork gaskets – they are lightweight, no synthetic binder. A cheap and flexible choice of materials, often found in advertisements or bulletin boards for aesthetic reasons. This grade has less strength and durability and is more light brown in color.

Nitrile cork seals – a large proportion of our cork gaskets are manufactured with a bonding agent, in this case nitrile rubber (NBR). The appearance of this grade differs from the resin bonded grade as it shows the speckled appearance of a cork/nitrile rubber blend as a result of combining the two products. The addition of nitrile rubber to the cellular structure allows these cork gaskets to be used where it is warm and provides a seal. These seals are often used to seal against oils and chemicals. Cork gaskets bonded with neoprene – at VERMET, we also have a great demand for neoprene-bonded cork gaskets. This time, neoprene rubber (CR) is added to the cork mix, making it suitable for applications where water tightness is critical. The appearance of this grade differs from the resin-bonded grade as it shows the speckled appearance of a cork/neoprene rubber blend as a result of combining the two products. The addition of neoprene rubber to the cellular structure enables sealing in higher temperature applications and also increases the durability of the seal when water and weather conditions are of high importance. These gaskets are often used to seal against water and usually used externally.

Thickness of cork gaskets

We supply a range of cork gaskets in many different thicknesses, depending on the grade and application required. The typical thicknesses we produce are 1mm, 1.5mm, 2mm, 3mm and 6mm.

It is important to make the right choice when selecting the thickness of the cork gasket, as it is the thickness and compression ratio that determine the accuracy of the seal in any application. If you have an idea for a project, please contact our sales department who will be happy to advise you.

Self-adhesive cork gaskets

VERMET is able to produce almost all types of cork gaskets with an adhesive backing on the reverse side. This allows for greater application accuracy when the adhesive is used as a third hand when attaching. Self-adhesive cork gaskets are supplied in individual formats or cut in rolls for ease of disassembly and speed of installation. Ask a member of our sales team for more information.
